Trump Tower New York, New York

Der Scutt, Design Architect

Trump Tower is a 58-story bronze tower of glass faceted to give scale to New York’s Fifth Avenue and to visually diminish the enormous bulk of the structure. As design progressed, Mr. Trump purchased additional air right parcels, constantly enlarging the tower on the same footprint.

The building affords the corporate retail and residential tenant an abundance of luxury and choice location. This mixed-use structure includes seven levels of retail, 13 floors of office tenancy, and 38 floors of luxury condominiums. The architecture permits up to 13 corner offices per floor and a series of cascading private terraces overlooking Fifth Avenue with sweeping views of Central Park. Most residential rooms have two exposures of New York City’s skyline, generating the tower’s saw-tooth configuration.

Interconnecting landscaped walkways lead into Trump Tower’s atrium of marble, glass, skylights, and waterfalls. Lined with some of the world’s most prestigious shops and noted restaurants and the atrium has become a tourist attraction, a gathering place for people, and a thoroughfare for commerce. Although the atrium is not a large space, a rich palette of marble, polished bronze, and tinted mirrors visually expand the atrium and heighten the desire to shop.

The New York Times architecture critics lavished great praise on the design. Ada Louise Huxtable called the building “a New York blockbuster of superior design.” Paul Goldberger wrote, “[T]he atrium of Trump Tower may well be the most pleasant interior public space to be completed in New York in some years.”
