Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation New York, New York

After DSA prepared an in-depth feasibility study, The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation purchased The Playboy Club building on East 59th Street with the intention of a complete renovation for the bank’s U.S. Corporate Headquarters. The entire structure, both interior and exterior, was gutted and a new penthouse was constructed on the top floor. A new building service core was constructed. The street facade maximized tenant fenestration while still providing a masonry stone balance in keeping with the dominant stone and masonry structure to the west. Construction costs were $3.9 million.

The lobby is modest in size in order not to detract from valuable ground floor rentable area. Granite and polished bronze metal trim provide a pleasing and dignified entrance ambience. A new bank branch was also designed, with the entrance located at the rear of the lobby.

DSA also provided interior design and planning services for the Bank’s executive and operations offices.

The project was completed within budget in 1985.
