625 Madison Avenue New York, New York

DSA headed the design team for the $18-million renovation of this post-war office building in excess of 300,000 square feet for The Related Companies. A new curtain wall was constructed over the existing 17-story facade using bands of multi-colored glass, with tenant occupancy in place during construction. New decorative storefronts were designed to enhance the building’s retail space and to provide flexibility to future tenants with removable storefront signage panels.

The original one-story, unattractive lobby was gutted and a new two-story terraced lobby was constructed. The lobby steps back to reveal the retail areas to the public. The new entrance has landscaped terraces that culminate in an 88-feet-wide dramatic space. A combination of rich materials, including brecchia oniciata and paradiso marble, bronze, and bronze glass, adorn this spacious new environment.

In 1990, 625 Madison was awarded the Tucker Award for Design Excellence. Jury comments: “In New York—a mecca of quality lobbies—this one stands out. There is an obligation to upgrade the many building lobbies in this city and this sets a good example.”

Construction was completed in August 1988.
